Common Questions
Why does the app assume 40" of usable width?
Quilting cotton is usually sold as 42" to 44" wide, but once the selvages are trimmed off and the edge is squared up, some bolts leave you closer to 40". A plan worked out at 40" will fit almost any bolt, so that is where new fabrics start. If you know your fabric is wider, open that fabric and change its usable width. The plan is recalculated for that width. Each fabric also has a width check that shows what changes between 40" and 44", for example "at 40" you get 11 per strip; at 42" you get 12". Tap a width there to use it for that fabric. To change the starting width for all new fabrics, go to Settings.
What's the difference between "need" and "buy"?
Need is the exact amount of fabric the cutting plan uses. Buy is what to ask for at the cutting counter. It adds the margin you chose (one spare strip per fabric to start with, to cover a miscut, plus any pre-wash shrinkage you set), then rounds up to what the shop sells, such as the next ⅛ yd, and to the shop's smallest cut. Each fabric shows both amounts and what the margin adds, so you can decide whether you want it.
What does the saving against the plain plan mean?
The plain plan is the same quilt cut one piece size at a time, with the leftover strip ends set aside instead of used for other pieces. Spare Yard's plan fits other pieces into those strip ends. The saving is how much less fabric its plan buys than the plain one. Both plans give you every piece the quilt needs, so nothing is short in either; the saving is fabric you don't have to buy. When the plain plan can't be beaten on a fabric, the app tells you so.
What's free?
All the calculators are free: backing, binding, batting, how much fabric a number of pieces needs, and resizing a block. So is your first full plan, with everything in it: the shopping list, the cutting list, the strip pictures, the saving, the width check, the counter card, and sharing the list as text. Deleting your free plan doesn't give you another free one.
What does the one-time unlock add?
The unlock gives you more plans, including duplicating a plan, and cutting mode, which takes you through the cut strip by strip at the mat and remembers what you've ticked off. It also adds the printable cutting sheet. It is a single purchase, shared with your family through Family Sharing. There is no subscription.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open Settings in the app and tap "Restore purchases", or tap Restore on the unlock screen. Make sure you're signed in with the Apple Account you bought it with.
Can I use centimetres and metres?
Yes. In Settings, set Units to "Centimetres and metres". New plans then measure pieces in centimetres and buy fabric in metres, starting from 102 cm of usable width and a 10 cm shop step, which you can change. A plan keeps the units it was made in, so changing the setting doesn't convert plans you've already made.
Does it work with precuts?
Yes. On a fabric, set "Bought as" to a precut instead of yardage: fat quarter, fat eighth, jelly roll strips, charm pack, mini charm pack or layer cake. The plan fits your pieces into them and tells you how many to buy. If you enter how many you already have, it tells you how many more you need. If a piece is too big for that precut, the app names the smallest precut that would hold it, or you can switch that fabric back to yardage with one tap. There's a one-line explanation of fat quarter versus quarter yard right under the picker, since the two are easy to confuse.
