How do I import a Final Draft (.fdx) file?

Open the Files browser inside Linewright and choose Import. Linewright supports lossless round-trip with Final Draft .fdx files, and it can read and write Fountain .fountain files directly. Imported .fdx files are stored as Fountain on disk so you stay in a portable text format.

Does Linewright need an internet connection?

No. Linewright is offline-first. Writing, importing, exporting, and the on-device Character Voice Check all work with airplane mode on. You only need the network for App Store purchase, iCloud Drive sync, and software updates.

Will my scripts sync between iPad and iPhone?

Yes, if you enable iCloud Drive sync. Linewright stores .fountain files and their .linewright/ sidecars in your own iCloud Drive container. The sync happens through your iCloud account; we never see the files. Without iCloud, scripts live only on the device you wrote them on.

Is the Character Voice Check sending my script to OpenAI or a cloud service?

No. The Character Voice Check uses Apple's Foundation Models framework, which runs entirely on your iPad. Your dialogue and character names are never sent to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, a Linewright server, or any other cloud AI provider. This is part of the brand promise: the model is on the device, not in the cloud.

What's the difference between Base Unlock and Pro Tools?

Base Unlock ($19.99, one-time) unlocks unlimited writing — full Fountain editor, .fdx import/export, PDF export, on-device Character Voice Check, iCloud Drive sync, Apple Pencil annotation on imported PDFs. Pro Tools ($29.99, one-time, optional add-on) adds production tooling: scene numbering, revision colors and locked-pages workflow, and production reports. Pro Tools is for working writers and production staff; most aspiring writers will never need it. Both are one-time purchases. There is no subscription tier.

Will the Pro Tools purchase include future v1.x AI features?

The on-device AI features that ship in v1 (Character Voice Check) are part of Base Unlock. Future AI features released in v1.x updates after launch will be included in your Base Unlock — that is the "Buy once. Write forever." commitment. New production-tooling features released as part of Pro Tools v1.x updates will be included in your Pro Tools purchase. A hypothetical major v2.0 with a different feature scope years from now could be a separate purchase, but we have no plans for that and nothing on the current roadmap suggests it.

Can I export to Final Draft, Highland, or Beat?

Yes. Linewright exports .fdx for Final Draft and .fountain for any tool that reads Fountain (Highland, Beat, Slugline, Scrivener with the Fountain plugin, and many others). PDF export uses industry-standard screenplay layout in US Letter and A4. The .fdx round-trip is lossless on the elements Final Draft and Linewright both understand.

Does Linewright work with Apple Pencil?

Yes. Apple Pencil is first-class for annotating imported PDFs in read mode — actor sides, table-read scripts, marking up someone else's draft. Pencil annotations are stored in the .linewright/ sidecar alongside the script, so they sync via iCloud Drive with the script.

What's the file format if I want to back up my scripts outside iCloud?

The native format is Fountain — a plain-text screenwriting format with a published spec at fountain.io. Your scripts are stored as .fountain files plus a .linewright/ sidecar directory for app-specific metadata (outline notes, Pencil annotations, etc.). You can copy these out via the iOS Files app to Dropbox, Google Drive, a USB drive, email, AirDrop, or any other destination. The .fountain file itself is readable in any text editor.

How do I get a refund?

All purchases are processed by Apple. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com or contact Apple Support directly. We do not process payments or refunds.

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

Open Settings inside Linewright and tap Restore Purchases. Your Base Unlock (and Pro Tools, if purchased) is tied to your Apple ID and transfers automatically. Both products are family-shareable, so household members on Family Sharing get access too.
